How do I register myself? How do I get a login?

For using the learning-platform OPAL you need a valid login, which is given to you by the ZIH (Center for Information Services and High Performance Computing) of the TU Dresden.

Students of the TU Dresden receive the login automatically with their matriculation (see transcript).

Lecturers, staff members and guests (for example exchange-students or visiting lecturers) can apply at the ZIH for a standard-login:: fill in the form...

Partners of any Saxon university or college can apply for a login for external users directly at the system operator. This application can be made by the particular department or chair with a professor of the TU Dresden as party to the contract.

With this login you can register yourself at the learning-platform OPAL. On your first login you have accept the terms of use for the learning-platform OPAL.


I do have a login but I cannot register myself!

All the logins (user-name/ password) are administrated centrally by the ZIH of the TU Dresden.

Note: Please keep in mind that you just use your user-ID without the addition @tu-dresden.de for your OPAL-login. For all the other services, like Webmail, W-Lan or VPN, you use your user-ID together with @tu-dresden.de.

Attention: Do you already have changed your first password?
You have to change your first password initialy to sign on at the learning-platform.

How can I change my password?

The password cannot be changed within the learning-platform OPAL, because the logins (user-name/ password) are administrated centrally by the ZIH of the TU Dresden.

But it is possible to change it via a web form: change your password...


I forgot my password. How can remove it?

I married. How can I adapt my last name?

The master data (first and last name) are administrated centrally by the ZIH of the TU Dresden and cannot be adapted within the learning-platform OPAL.

A secure connection failed. What am I supposed to do?

You will have these kind of warnings if the used browser (still), by default, does not include the certificate DFN PKI. Affected are, for example products of mozilla, especially the current version Firefox 3.0. Now, access to encrypted sites with an unknown certificate is, by default, denied. But despite the warning, the connection is secure encrypted.

You can configure an exceptional rule in the browser or you install the missing root certificat manually...


How can I quit a learning-group?

Thus, is hardly not possible.
To quit a learning-group, which always refers to a course, is just possible for students within the probably existing course-components „registration“, if the author of the course or the lecturer has activated this option. Basically, it is not possible to quit a learning-group within the pages of an overview of all the groups.

If you want to cross of a learning-group of the past terms and you don´t have a possibility of the course-components „registration“, please contact your lecturer or the course-author (see the page with the details of the course). Then, he/ she can cross you off the particular learning-group. The staff members of the department of e-learning supports are not authorized to do this.

By contrast, to quit a work-group, which exist independently of courses, is always possible.


Will my data be passed on to external companies (BPS Bildungsportal Sachsen GmbH)?

The BPS Bildungsportal Sachsen GmbH was established in 2005 as a joint venture of Saxon universities and colleges that now operate as partner. Since then the main task of the BPS Bildungsportal Sachsen is to handle and to enhance the system of the learning-platform OPAL on instruction of the Saxon universities and colleges. For this purpose, the TU Dresden has closed a maintenance contract with the BPS Bildungsportal Sachsen GmbH.

A basic element of this infrastructure is a spread mechanism of authentication (based on Shibboletz), which uses the login-data of the electronic data processing centre of the universities and colleges. So, it is possible that the BPS Bildungsportal Sachsen doesn´t have to place new own logins for OPAL. Instead, the existing accounts of the universities and colleges can be used. For such an infrastructure it is necessary that the data of the server of the TU Dresden will also be used by partners as well as by subsidiaries of the TU Dresden. You may be sure that within this process only secure connections are used. But therefor you have to agree on the terms of use at your registration.

The transmission of data to third parties is, according to the §4 der OPAL-terms of use ausgeschlossen. forbidden. You are always able to ask gratuitously for information on your personal data that is recorded by the system operator BPS Bildungsportal Sachsen GmbH: support@bps-system.de


What is bildungsportal.sachsen.de? Why is it within the URL?

To provide a central learning-platform with all its infrastructure concerning the stuff and the technique arose from the initiative „Bildungsportal Sachsen“ (2001-2006).

OPAL – an online-based platform for academic teaching and learning at Saxon universities and colleges” is centrally offered as a strategic learning-platform at the TU Dresden since 2006. To support the use of OPAL two contact persons (former adviser on a regional level) of the Media Centre are at the disposal of members of the TU Dresden.

The handling as well as the enhancement of the system is for all Saxon universities and colleges guaranteed by the BPS Bildungsportal Sachsen GmbH, which is a company that was launched only for this purpose and is based on a maintenance contract.
